Abstract

© APFIS 2015. All rights reserved. Hybrid FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular columns (hybrid DSTCs) are a novel form of structural members. A hybrid DSTC consists of a layer of concrete sandwiched between an outer tube made of FRP and an inner tube made of steel. Extensive experimental research has been conducted on hybrid DSTCs and has confirmed their excellent ductility and seismic resistance. This paper presents a numerical column model for simulating the cyclic and seismic behaviour of hybrid DSTCs. The numerical model was implemented in OpenSees (Open System for Earthquake Engineering Simulation) using its fiber-section force-based nonlinear beam-column element. In the numerical column model, a new cyclic stress-strain model proposed by the authors' group is adopted for the confined concrete in hybrid DSTCs. The proposed numerical model is shown to provide reasonably accurate predictions for the hysteretic behaviour of hybrid DSTCs.
