Abstract
Children begin to drop out of physical activities at the age of 12-13 years (Kemper et al., 1992, Paediatrics, 13, 52-59). Given the acknowledged physiological and psychological bene® ts of regular exercise, and predictive nature of levels of adolescents' physical activity for activity in later life (Taylor et al., 1995: In Advances in Exercise Adherence, edited by R.K. Dishman. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics), lack of adolescent exercise may result in heightened risk of serious disease and shortened life expectancy of adults (Morris et al., 1953, Lancet, ii, 1053-1057).
