RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background
Song of Songs is a large scale work commissioned by The Song Company and ABC Radio, The Listening Room, for The Song Company’s twentieth birthday.

Research Contribution
Song of Songs is a 5 movement, 40 minute work for six live voices, 12 pre-recorded voices, percussion and piano. It is composed in two versions – live performance and radiophonic version. The work uses prerecorded voices and instruments and live singers to create a spatial tapestry that explores the sensual and dramatic elements of the text. The work is the setting of a modern recrafting by the Melbourne poet Barry Hill of the original biblical text, and represents a novel creation in the world of choral sound.

Research Significance
• First Performance: The Song Company, conductor Roland Peelman, Sydney Opera House, May 2004
• Radiophonic version nationally broadcast, ABC Radio
• Finalist, AMC-APRA, Composition of the Year, 2005
• CD recording – Vocal Music of Andrew Schultz, The Song Company (Songworks, Sydney)
