RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background
Curatorial: 2005–06 Curator, 1967: Selected works MCA Collection, MCA, Sydney. 28th Nov 2005 – 23 April 2006 Selected public Forums and Lectures: 2005 Artist’s floor talk; seminar: Jacky Redgate & Dr Ann Stephen, 1967: Selected works from the MCA Collection, MCA; 2004. Exhibition catalogue and essay, Jacky Redgate, ‘Arriving in Australia’, 1967: Selected works from the MCA Collection.

Research Contribution
To complement the survey exhibition Jacky Redgate: Life of the System 1980¬2005 I curated an exhibition from the MCA collection which further demonstrated my interest in systems, featuring works from the collection which were made or collected in 1967, the year I emigrated to Australia from London. By bringing together personal and institutional narratives, I explored the artistic and social landscape of the time, when Australia was opening up to the world and contemporary art had a fascination with new technologies and perceptual theories. Featuring kinetic, Op, conceptual and minimal art by artists such as Carl Andre, Ian Burn, Bridget Riley and Julio Le Parc, 1967 provided a fascinating insight into the MCA Collection and creating connections to my own work.

Research Significance
Informed by a strong interest in systems and taxonomies, my work brought together various strands of intellectual investigation, ranging across science, aesthetics, art history and politics. The curatorial project drew out key works in the MCA collection of historical significance and also offered insight into my own work and influences. Significantly, many of these works had not been seen since 1967; the work of Lily Greenham was rebuilt from installation instructions.
