Monte Carlo characterization of nanoparticle radio-enhancement for hadron therapy

Publication Name

Monte Carlo in Heavy Charged Particle Therapy: New Challenges in Ion Therapy

Abstract

After accumulating substantial experimental evidence for high atomic number nanoparticle (high-Z NP) sensitization of cells and tumors under photon irradiation, in the last few years more studies have focused on the combination of proton or ion radiation with NPs and observed large differences in biological endpoints, including cell survival, tumor progression and animal overall survival. This chapter illustrates how state-of-the-art Monte Carlo techniques can be used to investigate NP radio-enhancement to help to understand the fundamental mechanism behind it and the biological result, to guide upcoming studies.
