Abstract

Due to the advancements in technology, the demand for electric power keeps on increasing, which further leads to voltage stability problems. Another undesirable effect is an increase in the transmission line losses in a heavily loaded transmission network. Furthermore, it alters the active and reactive power flows in the line. One of the solutions to this problem is the effective implementation of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices. These devices can control power flow in the transmission system to improve asset utilization. In this paper, the modeling and design of the hydrogen fuel cell system-based static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) is developed for regulating the power flow in the transmission line. To validate the proposed work, a two-bus system with different configurations is designed and simulated with and without a compensator in a MATLAB/Simulink platform. The simulated results comply and validate the theoretical development of fuel cell-based SSSC proposed in this paper.
