Abstract
The death of Neil Smith has robbed human geography of a major talent all too soon. Indeed, his loss will be felt keenly in the wider social sciences and not just among Marxists - who called him one of their own. He was raised in Dalkeith (near Edinburgh), Scotland, and studied Geography at St Andrews University (graduating with Honours First Class in 1977).
