Abstract
T he issue of HIV notifications among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background populations in Australia has been gaining momentum in recent years. Between 1999 and 2003, 20 percent of AIDS diagnoses were from people from non-English speaking countries, a marked increase from 13 percent as recorded in between 1994 and 1998. From 2002 to 2003, 21 percent ofHIV notifications came from people born in non English speaking countries, with a disproportionate number coming from Asian and Sub-Saharan African countries of birth where there is a high prevalence ofHIV.1
