Abstract
Artefacts produced in molluscan shell are a conspicuous feature of both the ethnographic and archaeological records of the Asia-Pacific region. There is definite evidence for shell tool production and shell ornament use by modern humans from c 40,000-30,000 years ago in Indonesia and Australia.
