Abstract

At the International Symposium on Science and Management of Suva Lagoon held in Suva from 30 March to 1 April 2005, a large amount of information was presented. In addition, many comments were made about the implications of the knowledge available and on where the management of the lagoon should proceed from that point. While there was considerable discussion in the individual sessions, a concerted attempt to appraise all of the valuable contributions was made in a final session where participants were divided into four discussion groups and the following themes for the groups were considered: Knowledge, Planning, Management and Community Engagement. In the discussions, an attempt was made to assess the key points in the symposium presentations, to determine the knowledge gaps/issues to be addressed, and to list actions that needed to be taken to improve the management of the lagoon.
