Background: Dorothy Hewett's Golden Valley is an AWGIE award winning play (1982 Children’s Original) that tells the story of twelve-year-old Marigold who is adopted by a family of bush creatures. Theatre South presented the Sydney premiere of Golden Valley as the first production in Chatswood's then new Zenith Theatre. Hewett was playwright in residence at the University of Wollongong during 1985 when Theatre South performed one of her plays, The Men From Mukinupin. Hewett writes - "I see Golden Valley as one of the cycle of pastoral plays which began with Mukinupin in 1979”.
