Scuppering Somali piracy: global responses and paths to justice

Abstract
This chapter examines global responses to piracy focusing particularly on the recent upsurge in piracy activity activity off the Horn of Africa and related United Nations resolutions. The international and national law framework for piracy offences and the jurisdictonal issues surrounding apprehension, investigation and prosecution of pirates are discussed. The chapter also explores prominent piracy attacks and the responses of the shipping industry and world navies to these incidents.
