Abstract
I focus here on cruises to the 'wild' frontier, those areas less amenable to permanent human settlement, located both within the confines of the main islands as well as more distant islands in the Southern Ocean. The chapter also highlights cruises to the tropical islands of the South Pacific, whose indigenous populations were brought under New Zealand's colonial authority in the early twentieth century.
