Abstract
This chapter analyses and theorises some of the prominent films, film genres and industry activities that have contributed to the continued global expansion of the South Korean film industry. It investigates several ways in which South Korean cinema is thriving on the international scene in manners that would have been unthinkable before government censorship was rescinded in 1996. In fact, two decades later, the end of official censorship can be seen as the precise moment that marked the beginning of an industry boom, and the largescale evolution of a national cinema that has developed a shrewd mix of Hollywood elements with Asian values and local notions of traditional and modern culture.
