Abstract
The Wunderkammer - those rooms of wondrous things collected by Renaissance princes - is the product of princely passions and unmet desires for knowing the world. As if believing that knowledge was power, Renaissance kings and princes collected and then organised in various ways striking things fetched from the distant past and also distant lands recently accessed by European merchants and conquistadors. Thus the Wunderkammer is an early cultural expression of new avenues for princely power opened up by colonialism.
