Abstract

There is a burgeoning critical literature of higher education which comments on the cultural changes associated with 'research quality measurement'. This special issue is a contribution to that literature and an attempt to consider the ways in which the discipline of literary studies is affected by that measurement and its terms of reference. This consideration is made more urgent by the growing momentum of calls to introduce 'impact' as an element of the now normative quality assessment exercises being run in most university systems in the Western world.
