Abstract

Marine scientific research is critical to enhance human understanding of the marine environment and respond to challenges facing ocean governance. Scientific advances and technological developments drive transformative changes in how, where and by whom, marine scientific research can be conducted. These advances present opportunities to enhance knowledge and deliver benefits. Howerver, they also bring new challenges for governance, particularly where the legal classification of research activities is unclear or there is the potential for adverse environmental impacts. Ths chapter will examine the nature and importance of marine scientific research, the international framework for the regulation of marine scientific research and some of the emerging challenges for regulation.
