Abstract
The outpouring of gay and lesbian literature since 1980 has responded to and helped shape key developments in gay and lesbian culture. It is around two of the most momentous of these developments - the AIDS epidemic and the phenomenon of "post-gay" -that this chapter is organized. Each of these developments has its own lineaments and each has had quite specific manifestations and ramifications; yet they are not unrelated.
