Abstract
The nineteenth century marked the high point of European exploratory expeditions in Australia. But they enjoyed a dynamic afterlife in twentieth-century national culture. Motorised overland journeys emerged as a new form of settler expedition that drew on familiar colonial tropes of land being won through ardous feats of exploration and travel across 'unknown' contients.
