Abstract
Experimental and modelling studies have been conducted to probe high temperature phase transformations in Fe–C alloys. Novel experimental techniques have been developed for the in situ study of solidification phenomena, in particular the peritectic transition, using laser-scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). Experimental results have been used to benchmark simulations generated using Micress, a multi-component, multi-phase phase field-modelling package. The combination of in situ experiments and modelling studies has led to new insights into the role of cooling rate and solute segregation on transformation kinetics.
