Poisoning of the Precipitation of Alumina Trihydrate by Mannitol

Abstract
Mannitol has been used as a model hydroxy organic compound to investigate poisoning of the precipitation of alumina trihydrate due to organic compounds present in Bayer liquor. The influence of mannitol on population density of particles was studied by sampling during the precipitation process and analyzing particle size distributions using a Coulter Multisizer zone analyzer. It was found that mannitol reduced both the growth and nucleation rate.
