Abstract

© APFIS 2019. All right reserved. In the current study, the effect of geogrid reinforcement on the failure mode and propagation of cracks of concrete pavements under cyclic loads was investigated. Three groups of notched concrete beam specimens having the dimensions of 150 mm × 150 mm × 550 mm were tested under cyclic four-point bending loads. Each group included three specimens. The concrete specimens of the three groups were either unreinforced, reinforced with one layer of geogrid or reinforced with two layers of geogrid. The triaxial geogrid was used as a fatigue resisting material and placed at the depth of 55 mm from the bottom of the concrete beam specimens. Fatigue tests were conducted at a constant frequency of 7 Hz under different load levels. The concrete beam specimens were subjected to 50000 cycles for each stress level. Test results indicated that the triaxial geogrid increased the fatigue life of concrete specimens reinforced with geogrid with increasing the length of cracks when subjected to repeated loads. The resistance of the concrete beam specimens reinforced with geogrid against the fatigue failure could improve the performance of geogrid reinforced concrete specimens before failure occurs.
