Behaviour of Square HSC Columns Reinforced with SEA Sections under Axial Compression

Abstract
This study presents a new method to reinforce square high strength concrete (HSC) columns with steel equal angle (SEA) sections. When using the SEA sections as longitudinal reinforcement, they can enhance the strength and ductility of concrete columns. These improvements are due to the fact that a SEA section, for a given cross-sectional area, has a higher second moment of area than the traditional steel bars as well as they provide a greater confinement area for the concrete core of columns. A total of five HSC column specimens with 210 mm square cross-section and 800 mm height were cast and tested under concentric axial loads. The effect of the SEA sections as longitudinal reinforcement as well as longitudinal reinforcement ratio and the spacing of the lateral steel ties on the strength and ductility behaviour of the columns were examined. The experimental results showed that the use of the longitudinal SEA sections provided an improvement in the strength of the SEA column specimens compared to the steel bar column specimen. In addition, the ductility of the column specimens was significantly increased by the use of longitudinal SEA sections instead of traditional steel bars.
