Abstract
A new method has been proposed for simulating the inclusion deformation and the crack generation during rolling by finite element method, in which a transition layer between the inclusion and the strip matrix is established and the material failure considered. The inclusion behavior in type 304 stainless steel strip during cold rolling has been simulated with it. The calculated results show that the bond strength between the inclusion and the strip matrix clearly affects the crack generation during rolling, and that the lower the bond strength is, the more possible the cracks appear. Simulation of the behavior of inclusion during rolling with the transition layer between the inclusion and the strip matrix gives a way to analyze the effects of the rolling conditions and the bond strength between the inclusion and the strip matrix on the strip quality. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
