Abstract
This paper originates from a qualitative self-study into the lived experiences of the author, as a beginning teacher of primary school mathematics. The focus of the study was to identify the influences, issues and challenges of a beginning teacher trying to implement reform-oriented teaching practices. One of the important issues to emerge from data collected in both years of the study was the use of a compulsory textbook and the authors changing perceptions (as teacher and researcher) of its role and value as a teaching and learning tool.
