Abstract

Building new electronic instruments has been closely allied with my work as a composer ever since I first graduated in Music from Sydney University in 1972. My work first took the path of building purposebuilt analogue electronics, until the early 1980s when digital hardware design became a foundation for my creative work, culminating in the development of microcontrollers which I built for real-time algorithmic composition. Finally, in 2003, with funding from the Australian Research Council, I began work on a project called the Pocket Gamelan and developed electronic musical instruments as interactive software to create microtonal music using Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones.
