RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background
Documentary/drama film examining the circumstances of Sir Eugene Goossens’ association with Sydney Symphony Orchestra and his controversial departure from Australia. The film investigates Goossens’ legacy as a composer as well as an artist who shaped the Australian musical environment. My role was that of musical advisor, interpreter and performer. I also assisted in the sound editing of the final film. The process involved collaboration with professional musicians, the director, sound editor and leading actor.

Research Contribution
Rather than provide a purely historical narrative, the film approached the subject from the perspective of existing fictional responses, literary, theatrical and operatic, to the controversial narrative, dramatising the scandalous history of a major player in Australian musical life. I performed as the on-screen hands of the actor playing the role of Goossens, playing a selection of his piano music. In addition I recorded, for the soundtrack, appropriate companian works by early 20th century composers who had influenced Goossens’ compositional output. My research involved investigating many of Goossens’ scores and exploring his style in order to choose the most appropriate repertoire from the period.

Research Significance
Film written and directed by acclaimed Australian cinematographer, Geoff Burton. Screenings in Sydney and Melbourne film festivals. ABC TV screenings (Program Summary) and commercial cinema release.
