RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT
Research Background
This was a research consultancy project which involved producing a generic digital voyage log engine for US based polar region travel company, Quark Expeditions. The company had previously only supplied written logs to passengers, but were now seeking to include a range of rich media to be delivered electronically via CD-Rom. The issue was how to create a template engine and production pipeline for producing these electronic logs on a large-scale commercial basis (Quark runs over 50 cruises a year). After developing the engine, I travelled on a month long voyage to the Ross Sea Region in early 2005 and produced a sample digital log. This combined effort provided the basis for local company Theme Publications to develop a successful partnership with Quark Expeditions to produce their commercial digital logs.
Research Contribution
This was a very applied project, focusing particularly on the potential to de-couple multmedia programming from multimedia production. The digital log engine was entirely generic, enabling producers to swap media and modify configuration files to produce entirely new digital logs. This proved a very effective means of meeting very tight production schedules.
Research Significance
The digital log, as both concept and technical infrastructure, was accepted by a major international travel company as a viable proposition within their overall set of commercial operations. The work was contracted to local multimedia company, Theme Publications, which had up to five full time staff working on the project at any time and an international group of photographers and videographers producing material on specific cruises.
