RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background
As a composer and musician engaged in practice-based research at the tertiary level for over thirty-five years, my original creative works have served to extend and develop various genres of acoustic and electroacoustic music. These works have been performed, and in many cases commissioned, by performers of the highest international calibre. They were subsequently broadcast and disseminated both nationally and internationally via recordings and scores. The research objective with Verfranzt was to create a piece of chamber music in the classical tradition that extends the existing repertoire and expressive possibilities of the Clarinet Trio genre.

Research Contribution
This work incorporates postmodern compositional strategies similar to those encountered in the work of the contemporary English composer Michael Nyman. It involves the use of extended virtuoso performance techniques which are applied here to a harmonic framework extracted from the oeuvre of the nineteenth-century Austrian composer Franz Schubert (specifically the Impromptu for piano, D899 No.3, in G flat major).

Research Significance
Commisioned by the Sydney-based Charisma ensemble, Verfranzt is one of my most frequently performed compositions, and has frequently been performed and broadcast worldwide. It has been published on CD (“Charisma”, GWN002, Sydney 2002), and broadcast live on ABC Classic FM. It has been widely studied by my composition postgraduate students (8 successful doctoral completions since 2002, with a further 9 currently active) and performance students at the Sydney Conservatorium. Verfranzt has also been selected for inclusion on the HSC music syllabus for performance studies in NSW.
