Abstract
Smaller animals and birds have an increased metabolic intensity compared with their larger counterparts, with the basal metabolism / body mass relationship being proportional to mass -0.25. These differences in metabolism appear to result largely from changes at the cellular level, and the goal of this study was to examine whether molecular activity (MA) of sodium pumps from the kidney of these homeotherms reflected their differences in metabolism.
