Abstract

Distance, dislocation and harsh climatic conditions have rendered Australia one of the more strange and unusual destinations for Italian emigrants and an important aspect of the Italian Australian experience has been that of coming to terms with these factors. This paper proposes to provide a survey of non-fictional writing and oral histories by Italian immigrants in Australia from the mid-nineteenth century to the present examining in particular how Italians in Australia have adjusted to various Australian locales as well as their reactions to and views on Australia, Australians and Australian society, and also Modern Languages.
