Abstract

The Western and Central Pacific region. although relatively insignificant in international political terms, has made a significant contribution to the re-shaping and evolution of the contemporary law of the sea. The contributions by Pacific island States to the law of the sea have been particularly evident in: • fisheries generally, particularly the management of highly migratory fish stocks and the monitoring. control and surveillance of fisheries; and • regional enviromnental issues, particularly nuclear testing, and transport of nuclear and hazardous wastes.
