RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background
Holey was produced by an invitation to exhibit in the 2003 Clemenger Contemporary Art Award at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). The work comprises two-dimensional photographs of beach and seascapes that are ‘holey’. Spheres have been excised from the once seamless surface of the photographs, and reconstructed as three-dimensional photographic orbs, placed on low plinths just off the floor, creating a dynamic tension between photographic image and sculptural object.

Research Contribution
Holey is a series of unique works using photography and objects. It has been described as follows: The perception of these works relies on traditional notions of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional space. The slight shift between the two photographs … is magnified by the form of the work as a whole It is a work that splits our attention from the outset and from the outset we want to address this double nature of the work as its message.1
