RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background
2006 Clemenger Contemporary Art Award, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, curated by Kelly Gellatly and Jason Smith. 2006 Michael Desmond, ‘Jacky Redgate’, Clemenger Art Award (catalogue), National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne: 18–19.

Research Contribution
The 2006 Clemenger invited a group of established artists including me, Robert Baines, Janangoo Butcher Cherel, Anne Ferran, Ivan Namirrkki, Ken Thaiday, Imants Tillers, Hossein Valamanesh, Toni Warburton, Judy Watson, Judith Wright and the late Bronwyn Oliver to participate. The photographic series STRAIGHTCUT 111, 2006 and the sculptural work Edgeways, 2006 were produced for this exhibition. The work continued my ongoing interest in working with objects, mirrors and abstract compositions, extending the relationships in my work to photography, painting and sculpture.

Research Significance
The Clemenger Contemporary Art Award has a proven reputation as one of the most prestigious and exciting visual arts events in Australia. The 2006 Clemenger Contemporary Art Award is the fifth in the series and brought together a group of established artists whose work was conceptually and stylisticall diverse, yet unified in its engagement with some of the prevailing cultural and social issues of contemporary life. As the previous four exhibitons demonstrated, the Clemenger Contemporary Art Award is national in scope, cross generational , and brings into dialogue the works of indigenous and non-indigenous Australian artists. The exhibition was accompanied by a multi-author and scholarly catalogue and a range of public and education programs.
