RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background
As a composer and musician engaged in practice-based research for over thirty-five years, my original creative works have extended and developed various genres of acoustic and electroacoustic music. These works have been performed, and in many cases commissioned, by performers of the highest international calibre. The works have been subsequently broadcast and disseminated both nationally and internationally via recordings and scores. The research objective of this composition for organ and pre-recorded sounds was to investigate the effect of microtonal intervals which arise from the combination of a fixed pitch instrument with recorded sound which has been processed electronically.

Research Contribution
This work develops a number of innovative techniques not previously employed in music for the pipe organ. A click-track for precise co-ordination of tape and live performer was found to be necessary, and the music was mixed in surround sound. Digital signal processing algorithms were used to affect transpositions and time-stretching, and a complex tempo grid was constructed to maintain listener interest and to build tension.

Research Significance
First performed and recorded by the leading exponent of contemporary organ, Prof Hans-Ola Ericsson (Sweden), Forging has now been performed and broadcast in a number of countries worldwide. It was recently featured at the Contemporary Organ Music Festival April 11-14, 2007 in Rochester, NY, a significant international festival for organists with an interest in the contemporary repertoire, especially works with an electroacoustic dimension. It was performed by Naomi George, a member of the American Guild of Organists and organist at St Stephens Lutheran in Massachusetts.
