Abstract

The aim of the project is to determine the importance of the currently recommended high complex carbohydrate, high dietary fibre dietary regime, by the American Diabetes Association, in the control of Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus. For instance, are there some people with IDDM who consume the recommended high complex carbohydrate, high dietary fibre and low simple carbohydrate diet who nevertheless find great difficulty in managing their diabetes control, while other people with IDDM consume a low complex carbohydrate and low fibre diet and manage to maintain diabetes control ? Does the carbohydrate intake have an effect on the glycaemic control of the people with IDDM?
