Anomalous Effects in the THz Spectra for Quantum Magnet Atacamite

The polarisation and temperature dependence of the THz spectrum for single-crystalline atacamite has been measured. The non-resonant transmission background was seen to be strongly polarisation dependent. Two absorption bands were resolved in the frequency range up to 400 cm-1 at 226 cm-1 and 334 cm-1. Both absorption bands exhibited atypical behaviour, including frequency and linewidth shifting discontinuities between 15 K and 20 K. Additionally, there was a reduction of linewidth upon heating, and deviation from Bose-Einstein statistics in frequency shifting. Further investigation is needed to explain the origins of these anomalies.
