A Novel Configuration of a Hybrid Wind-Wave Energy Harvesting System for a Remote Island

The electrification of remote islands with a stable power network is challenging in the absence of large-scale utility grids. This paper aims to develop a novel hybrid wind-wave energy system (HWWES) configuration which can successfully feed a stable power to the customers of remote islands with a synergetic combination of wind and wave energy. The proposed configuration uses a minimum number of converters for the integration of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy system with the linear permanent magnet generator (LPMG)-based wave energy system. The enhanced power extraction from the HWWES is achieved by the advanced control schemes for the DFIG and the LPMG. The dynamic performance of the proposed system is tested under various operating conditions. The results prove the effectiveness of the proposed system as the stator voltage and the stator current of the DFIG remain sinusoidal and balanced, the frequency excursion remains within the acceptable band, and the common ac bus voltage of the distribution network remains stable under all operating conditions.
