Abstract

Our objective was to develop a diabetes education course for children of primary school age. Learning in school takes place within a clearly structured curriculum that has been nationally set, tested and delivered in the classroom (formal education). This structure can be advantageous in terms of planning, continuity and consistency. However, informal settings outside school can be more relaxing and less pressured environments for learners. In developing the Junior KICk-OFF course for children with diabetes we aimed to draw on the organisation and structural advantages of education curricula whilst planning delivery in a less formal setting.
