This presentation was undertaken in the context of a conference seeking to explore the future of the Illawarra,a, arguing for the role of the arts in terms of both their intrinsic and extrinsic values to make a substantial contribution to the regeneration of a region. Drawing on representative examples of projects, buildings, events, this paper drew on research internationally to argue that the Illawarra with its beautiful physical environment, shoddy built environment and run down buildings, loss of much of its manufacturing base, has everything to gain and nothing to lose by a considered regeneration and ongoing commitment to the arts.
