Abstract
In late 1995, newly appointed to the post of Director and Representative, or Ambassador, in UNESCO's Jakarta Office I approved a mission and recreation leave for one of my UNESCO staff, ecology specialist, Martha Klein. She was travelling to West Papua. Had I known what was about to happen, I would never have signed off on the mission.
