Abstract

This paper compares the performances of Hierarchical coding (HC) and multiple descriptions coding (MDC) on the transmission of videos over networks in the presence of packet loss. The paper examines different arrangements of groups of pictures (GOP) to evaluate the robustness against packet loss. The relationship between video quality and bit rate is employed to compare the performances of HC and MDC. In these experiments, two types of videos, with low and high levels of redundancy, are included and recommendations about the appropriate GOP structure and type of coding under various scenarios are presented.
