RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background

‘Visions From Her Bed’, a major solo exhibition, was presented by invitation at the Institute of Modern Art (IMA), Brisbane from 15 March to 26 April 2008. It followed on from and extended comprehensive survey exhibitions held at the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the monograph publication Michael Desmond ‘Imagining Space, Jacky Redgate: 1980–2003’.

Research Contribution

The exhibition combined key works from 1979 to the present, and included three new projects:

  • “Mother England”, A film by Jacky Redgate, S/8 (transferred to DVD 2008), Duration 5:30;
  • Edgeways 2006 – 2008, plastic, mirrors, number of parts of works - circa 120 components, 30 x 200 x 200 cm Overall (mirror square);
  • TAMING-THE SPECTRUM & Equal Solids 2008, 126 x 158 cm, Cibachrome;
  • STONEHENGE #1 2008, 85 X 28 X 10 cm; 84 X 44 X 10cm; 85 X 44 X 10cm; 145 x 67 x 10cm; 121 x 67 x 10cm respectively, Silver gelatin photograph on diasek, lexan brackets.

Research Significance

This comprehensive solo exhibition enabled Redgate to reflect on her work and make sense of the different phases characterising her career. A prestigious Australia Council for the Arts Fellowship (2007-09) provided timely support for a research that enabled Redgate to consolidate her practice and produce new work for the exhibition.
