Abstract

Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) are becoming widely popular given their economic and environmental advantages. Nevertheless, when connected for battery replenishment, the PEVs can affect the Power Quality (PQ) of the distribution power grids. In this paper, an intermediate control unit for the commercial battery chargers has been developed in the laboratory that can directly control the PEV charging load by modifying the power levels during the AC charging. The impacts of a mass-produced PEV on the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) during the charging period with different power levels using the in-house developed unit have been investigated through field measurements. Furthermore, a Home Charging Management System (HCMS) that employs the intermediate control unit has been designed. Based on the outcome of the field studies, the charging impacts due to the integration of PEVs in the distribution systems is examined through network modelling and simulation. The results from the field experiments together with the model based case study, demonstrate that the proposed intermediate control unit can be adopted effectively for scheduling the PEV charging by controlling the PEV load in the distribution networks.
