Abstract

Within coming years, Highwall mining (HWM) as a technology, will be more frequently considered as a means to optimise resource recovery within a particular mining context and assessment of the risks/benefits associated with such a technology need to be fully addressed by those undertaking the assessment. The Addcar technology has been in the forefront of innovation and technological enhancements since its introduction in 1990. The experiences of the Addcar team, in Australia and the USA is that the requirements for successful utilisation of the system or its counterparts, the range of applications and the comparative capability of the relevant systems are often not fully understood and as a consequence opportunities are lost or projects commenced with unrealistic expectations. Through the use of explanatory examples and references, the authors seek to highlight those areas of critical nature that require specific focus when assessing the potential use of HWM technology and the range of applications such technology can be utilised in.
