Development of combined high retention enzymatic membrane bioreactor and ultraviolet radiation based advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of trace organic contaminants

This thesis explored the potential of options such as direct-contact membrane distillation, oxidoreductase enzymes, and UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the degradation of a broad spectrum of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) that are ubiquitously detected in the wastewater and wastewater-impacted surface water bodies. The presence of even trace concentrations (ng/L to µg/L) of TrOCs in the water bodies and their continuous exposure can cause potentially harmful effects to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Therefore, the removal of TrOCs is essential for the safe disposal of wastewater into the environment.
