The aim was to train nurses to perform endoscopic procedures previously only undertaken in Australia by doctors. Although new to Australia, nurse endoscopists are well established in the United Kingdom. Recently published evidence based on a systematic review of the literature indicates that nurses can achieve similar results for efficacy and safety to those achieved by doctors.
