Two African writers give their point of view on the above question. Elechi Amadi is a Nigerian writer whose major novels, The Concubine and The Great Ponds deal with the traditional past of the people. Ngugi wa Thiong'o is a Kenyan writer whose novels deal with the Kenyan war of Independence and present-day political oppression in Kenya. His involvement with theatre in the vemacular has eamed him a year's imprisonment and he is at present in exile.
