Loads and generators causing harmonic distortion have traditionally been modelled as current sources. This model made it reasonable to apply distortion contribution limits in terms of harmonic current injected at point of connection. However, recent experiences have shown that inverter-based devices cannot be modelled as a current source without a shunt impedance. Therefore, the determination of the interaction of the grid and harmonic source must consider the impedances of both sources. Amplification of background voltage distortion due to the connection of new plants therefore may become significant. New issues regarding the calculation of distortion contribution are discussed: its estimation before commissioning, its evaluation during the life of the asset, its measurement uncertainty in relation to the limits imposed by the Network Service Provider. This paper presents an overview of these topics, proposes a different method to evaluate distortion contribution, and describes a fairer overall approach to harmonic distortion compliance.
