Abstract: The shortfall in the funding for construction, operation and maintenance of road infrastructure in Australia is substantial and future investment appears to be beyond the capabilities of government funding alone. In the past, the private sector has proven very willing to invest in PPPs with government to provide road infrastructure and, overall, its performance in relation to construction, operation and maintenance has been far superior to that of government and has relieved government of substantial risk. However, it is unlikely that the private sector will accept the same levels of risk on new PPPs as in the past. Citation: Gardiner, J. (2014).
